Imagine you're about to create a marketing video... You've got your interview questions, your location, and your subject ready to go. But there's one critical decision you need to make before you start filming: What interview style should you use โ "Off-Camera" OR "Direct-to-Camera"?
Now, I've been in the video production industry for a while, and I've seen my fair share of interviews. And let me tell you, the style you choose can make ALL the difference in how your audience perceives and connects with your message.
Off-Camera Interviews:
When you use an off-camera interview style, your subject is talking to an interviewer who is (you guessed it) off-camera. This creates a more relaxed, conversational vibe that's perfect for:
๐ธ In-depth storytelling
๐ธ Discussing personal experiences
๐ธ Focusing on the subject's expressions and emotions
Think: Documentaries, Brand Stories, Testimonials, etc.
But... there's a catch. If the interviewer's approach is too formal or lacks warmth, it can create distance between the subject and the audience. And that's the LAST thing you want in your marketing video.
Direct-to-Camera Interviews:
On the other hand, when you use a direct-to-camera interview style, your subject is speaking straight to the camera โ and by extension, straight to your audience. This style is all about:
๐น Creating an intimate, personal connection
๐น Simulating a one-on-one conversation with the viewer
๐น Engaging the audience on a deeper level
Think: MasterClass series, Netflix 'True Crime' shows, HBO documentaries, etc.
The downside? Direct-to-Camera interviews require extra equipment and setup time, which can increase complexity on set. But when done right, it's POWERFUL stuff.
So, which style should YOU choose?
Selecting the right style for your brandโs unique story can be challenging. At Emotive Films, we understand the nuances of Off-Camera and Direct-to-Camera interview styles, and we know how to get the most from each. Let us help you choose the RIGHT style for your next marketing video.
